Books that should stay in stores.

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Working in a bookstore, there’s a list that comes out once a month of books we have to return to the warehouse. It’s usually books that aren’t selling well and we have to remove them to make room for the books that are selling. Occasionally, there’s a book on the list that makes me very sad to return. This happened the other day.

In this case, it was The Crochet Stitch Bible.

I originally bought this book about six years ago, and it has been by far my best friend when it comes to crochet. I taught myself the craft using this as a guide, and it has clear diagrams and instructions for every kind of stitch you can imagine. If I’m bored, I’ll just grab some yarn and practice the designs in there.

I’ve become quite the skilled crocheter, and although I’ve used a few online tutorials, I wouldn’t be anywhere as good had I not owned this book. I can tackle any pattern… now I just have to make something other than little sample swatches. That’s the challenging part, and not because of difficulty. Rather, because of time.

Similarly, there’s a Knitting Stitch Bible that I also own. And it’s an equally valuable resource.

There are a few that I don’t have that I’ve been meaning to buy, but alas, they’ve all been removed from my bookstore shelves. The Embroidery Stitch Bible. The Quilter’s Stitch Bible and The Patchworker’s Stitch Bible. The Sewing Stitch and Textile Bible. Sigh. I guess I’ll have to order them online.

My first two have been so incredibly helpful that when the time comes to work on any of the other crafts (and I believe embroidery will be next), I’m not looking anywhere else for my teacher.

A cookies and butter and pumpkins entry.

Craft update! No science projects yet. Gotta clear off the list first. Still working on that yarn mosaic, and by “working on,” I mean it’s been sitting in the corner for weeks and I’ve thought about touching it.

So, other projects. We made sugar cookies!

Royal icing

So festive! And delicious! We made two batches within two days, and they’re all gone. We found out just how much I like sugar cookies.

Pumpkins! I love fall, Halloween, pumpkins, dried leaves, the smell of crisp air… Oh my. Fall is great. In the spirit of festiveness, I made some pumpkins to go on the table. I’m working on a bigger one to make a complete centerpiece, but for now, here’s two little pumpkins made out of yarn:

And the best is always saved for last.

This is a subtlety from the game “The Neverhood,” which I’m an ubergeek about. Lindel likes it a lot too, so now I’m not alone. Anyways, on to the butter!

First, I had to knead the sculpey a lot.

Joy kneads

A lot a lot.

Joy kneads more

Then I made the butter. Lindel helped because I was making it look more like a broken egg, which wasn’t what I was going for.

Butter, prebaked

After baking it and painting it, it was ready to be hung on the wall.

Butter on the Wall

And oh man, do I love it. It’s not only a(nother) homage to The Neverhood, but what better thing to put on the kitchen wall than the food item we use the most? Mmmm butter….

A Week in Art, More Art, Crochet, Beads, and Cross-stitch

Ok, I haven’t updated in a little while. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been making things. Quite the contrary, really. Let me do a photo update in chronological order (which really saves the best for last anyway…)

First! The elephants. Yeah, they’re done. I’m not sure why, but now that it’s in threes, I don’t really like it as much as I thought I would. It still looks nice, but when it was finished, I didn’t feel the need to stare and marvel at it for hours like I usually do with completed projects. But anyway, here it is hanging above the window:

Two elephants on three canvases

Second! I’m not going to share a picture of this one, partly because it’s still in progress and partly because of the nature of the project. My dad is a member of the National Cartoonist Society. He is putting together an NCS event honoring Frank Frazetta that’s taking place this fall. He’s asked the members of the NCS (who includes just about any cartoonist you can think of) to submit a caricature of Frazetta to put together in a scrapbook to present to him at the event. He asked for my help in putting it together, and in doing such, I get to put a caricature of my own in the book. Soooo, yeah. I’ve been working on that. It does, in fact, involve a woolly mammoth. Why wouldn’t it?

Third! Every once in a while, I pick up the crochet hook or knitting needles and just do something. I rarely actually turn it into anything and tell myself it’s just for practice. I’ve been “practicing” on a blanket since 2001. It’s just one of those things where I never finish what I start. So, I started something new. It’s just squares… They’re pretty versatile. I can make them as I feel and eventually turn them into something. A bag? A blanket? Who knows. But I’ve done 8 squares so far:

OOOh Squares

Fourth! In that huge box of beads I was working with last week, I found several pieces of jewelry that were already put together. They looked really old… They were made on regular string that was just, well, falling apart. I don’t know who originally made them. Big Mama? Granny? Mom? Who knows. It was done by someone in a previous generation. That’s all I know for sure. So I decided to take them apart and very carefully reconstruct them with sturdier material. They’re very vintage looking, but really quite neat:

Old Jewelry Revisited

Last! And best! And still in progress!

So, I keep seeing on the internets a bunch of people cross-stitching old pixelated video game characters like Mario and Zelda. I rarely played any of those Nintendo games. We were Sega kids… So why would I cross-stitch Mario? I wouldn’t, that’s why.
Instead, I tried to think of pixelated characters from my childhood. I bought some black cross-stitching fabric with the original intention of cross-stitching Missile Command from my Atari youth, but never got around to it. It just looked too easy. Something more complicated… Something more complicated…

One of my most favorite games ever! Sam & Max Hit the Road! Oh wow, did I ever play that game. Good old Lucas Arts with their good old pixels.

After working on it for a day and a half, I finished Max:

And no sooner did I start working on Sam:
Started Sam Stitches

As you can see, I’m not terribly far along with Sam, but let me tell you: That’s hours of work. And hours and hours. Either I’m extremely slow at cross-stitching (which is possible- my eyes aren’t great on small black surfaces) or it’s just one of the most time-consuming crafts there is. Right up there with quilting, crocheting, and knitting. Very tedious work, but I can’t wait to see the finished cross-stitch.

Fun!

Always with the elephants, Joy.

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately working on Miss Amy’s wedding invitations. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t feel right posting pictures of them (or of the process) before they’re sent out into the public. It feels like there should be an element of surprise when it comes to wedding invitations, like a grand reveal.

So you don’t get to see those.

But what I have done that I can show off is this:

elephant crochet

Yeah, I spent about an hour today crocheting an elephant head. It was my first time trying to crochet any shape besides a circle, so it was kind of interesting. He’s really cute, now I just have to decide what to do with him.

Aaaand, speaking of elephants. I stumbled on The Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project which, as their mission statment says, “is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the diminishing number of Asian elephants left on our planet through its work with domesticated elephants.”
From them, I bought a painting that was painted by an elephant. And I love it. The one I got? Here!

If you browse through the paintings done by other elephants, you’ll find some that are obviously a bouquet of flowers, or (even better) a portrait of an elephant. These animals paint better than some people I know.

Sorry for the delay. The basket’s been done for a few days and I’m already onto something new. But here is the basket; lined, in use, and all:

Basket!
As for my new project…We went to Michael’s in search of tiny class things to plant our small-rooted aquarium plants in (found them), and I picked up some glass jars with cork lids, mineral & dead sea salts, and two soap scents. I made my very own pretty jars of bath salts. Yay! But the scents are kind of fakey… I got green apple, which smells sort of like a blow-pop, and I got chamomile, which smells more like all that “clean linen” stuff you find everywhere. But these things were sealed in a cardboard-back package, so I couldn’t actually smell them until I got home.

After making these two, I decided I WANT MORE. But, I want things that smell good and natural, not chemicals that sort of smell nice.

I did a seach for essential oils, and I got back my new favorite website:
Mountain Rose Herbs

I’m trying not to spend a fortune, but… I really want to make Chamomile-Eucalyptus and Sweet Orange-Tea Tree salts. Hip hip! Really, I just want one of each of everything on that website, and possibly some rice and pretty linen fabrics to also make heat therapy bags.

And, in this category, everything that I make for myself, I also have to make one for mommy.

I start my new job on Monday. I’ll be training all next week.

Also, I keep getting ginormous amounts of spam comments on the stab-binding post. Why? Why?? WHY???

Basket case.

Today is my day off, but I’m going in to turn in my notice. Whew.

To relieve tension, I’ve been crocheting a basket.

Basket
Update: Today, on my day off, I turned in my notice. Two more bookstore weeks, then off to be Mrs. General Manager. Restaurant-ho!

The basket is still underway. The crochet part is almost done, just doing the nice little “lip” part. Then I’ll make some handles real quick, make a lining, and post the final masterpiece. It’ll take a few days though because of work stuff.
