Christmastime is Here

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

I love Christmas. We got our tree a couple days after returning from Thanksgiving at the beach. It’s the only holiday that gets my full-fledged attention for decorating. I made a wreath out of the tree trimmings, I have a cheesy glittery JOY plant stake that I show off from the patio. Christmas is the only acception to my glittery policy, but still only in moderation. If glitter appears on my face, it’s not ok. If it stays confined to the item it’s decorating, then ok. No other glitter is allowed, for the rest of the year. For after all,

I found a site called Spoonflower, which is based in Mebane, NC. (Which is where the preacher who married Lindel and I lives.) You can upload your own designs and they will print it on fabric for you. That’s so awesome. I really loved carving and block-printing my own designs, but this would be really good for any entricate details that would just be too hard to carve. I’ve uploaded a few, but mostly stuff that I have already carved and printed. I think I’m going to make a very detailed pattern and order some fabric from there.

Zipper pouch

Since I have so much canvas now (I found a good deal and figured I’ll be making a bunch of those block-printed bags) I decided I could spare two little 5″ x 6″ pieces. I had this little zipper pouch from the North Carolina Aquariums that I used to hold all of my wallet cards, and attached the keys to the zipper. It was so handy, but the only problem with it was that I didn’t make it.

So, I made a canvas zipper pouch. I was going to make it all mammothy, but decided it was too small to patterned with a 4″ x 5″ pattern. I’m going to make a single little design to put on it. (Or maybe I’ll just use my old puffer fish design. That was pretty cute.)

Anyway. Here it is, plain:

Zipper pouch

I made it a little larger than my old one, because I was always sticking change in it, nail clippers, etc, on top of all the cards I normally carry around. I’ll update when I decide what I’m going to put on it. Since my old one was fishes, I might stick with fishes.

Oh, also, in the process of making this, I used a zipper I had lying around the house. I only had two: one was 18″ and the other 7″. Both of these were too big… But after careful inspection, the little metal piece at the end can be bent (with pliers, or in my case, cuticle clippers. I use those things for crafts way more than I would ever use them for their intended purpose. They’re so precise and small!). You pull the metal part out and can repositioned in any place you need. Voila. Custom sized zippers.

Patterns are fun! Yay!

The mammoth pattern was so successful that I’ve already made a new pattern. Stingrays!

Sting Ray Tote

I’m loving block printing. Very, very much. I want to make a few more patterns. Then, I’m gonna make tons of stuff and probably open an Etsy store. Yay! Patterns!

Done!

It’s finished! Now to head to the grocery store and fill it up. :)

Totebag!

And also, to mass-produce. :)

Oh, yeah, there’s more.

I forgot because of all that spider nonsense. I was originally going to post about my latest project. No, there are no spiders involved.

I’m making a new quilt. This one’s just going to be a throw to keep in the living room. I don’t think I’ll ever have the heart to replace the one I made a few years ago. (Which you may remember from the old site.)

Anyhow, the new throw process:

The last quilt drove me crazy for a week, but this one will be smaller. Maybe I won’t go insane. :)

Bags bags bags

Here is a picture of the squirrel purse:

SQUIRRELS!

I’ve also made a tiny elephant print tote bag for groceries. (Well, that was the original purpose, but now I’ve ended up using it to lug around notebooks of work stuff.) It’s basically just a normal old canvas-style bag made out of this fabric:

(Haven’t taken a picture of the actual bag, but this will do. Just imagine some handles on that square, and there you go! Mental picture!)
